What's new in ForestVPN

Recent, user-visible improvements to the apps and the network behind them. Updated as we ship.

ForestVPN adapts to more networks, automatically

Some networks actively block standard VPN protocols. ForestVPN now climbs an adaptive ladder of obfuscated transports — padding and multi-port, then proven obfuscation transports, then traffic shaped to look like ordinary web traffic — engaging each rung only when the one below it stops getting through.

  • Kicks in automatically; on an open network you stay on the fast, low-cost path and never notice the rest.
  • Region defences are config-driven, so we can retune what engages where without shipping a new app.
  • Ships on by default at the base tier, free on every plan.

Choose how you connect with Routing Mode

Connections are now more resilient, and you get a say in how they're made. When UDP is blocked, ForestVPN falls back to its relay network over TLS instead of dropping — and a new Routing Mode control puts the choice in your hands:

  • Automatic — ForestVPN picks the best path for the network you're on.
  • Direct-preferred — favour the fastest direct connection when it's available.
  • Relay-only — pin every connection through the relay network.

Reconnects after switching between Wi-Fi and cellular are smoother, too.

Use your own devices as exit nodes — free

You can now turn one of your own devices into an exit node and send your traffic through it — say, route your phone through your home machine while you travel. It's wired end-to-end across iOS, macOS, and tvOS, with a picker to choose an exit and a panel to approve or revoke routes.

Promoting and using your own devices as exit nodes is free on every plan. Operator-shared exit nodes and multi-hop chains remain a Premium capability.

MagicDNS: name your devices, not their IPs

Your devices now have names on your private mesh network. MagicDNS gives every device a stable name under your mesh domain, so you can reach your laptop, phone, or home server without memorizing an IP:

  • Split-DNS keeps mesh names private while everything else resolves normally.
  • Custom records let you add your own names.
  • Live renames apply without restarting the tunnel.
  • No DNS leaks when you're routing through an exit node.

Post-Quantum Cipher Suite on Premium

The Post-Quantum Cipher Suite is now available on Premium and Enterprise. It uses hybrid key exchange — a classical algorithm combined with a post-quantum one (Kyber) — so the session key stays secure even against a future quantum computer.

It's built for the "harvest now, decrypt later" threat, where traffic recorded today could be decrypted years from now. Enable it in your plan settings; your standard ForestVPN encryption stays strong and private regardless.

Manage your subscription right in the app

Your subscription now lives in the app. iOS, macOS, and tvOS each gained a Subscription section reachable from the main navigation, showing your plan, its status, the next billing line, and where it's billed:

  • iOS — request a refund on a recent purchase and jump straight to system subscription settings.
  • macOS — open your billing dashboard in one click.
  • tvOS — scan a QR code to manage billing, and restore purchases in place.
